With its durability intact even after hundreds of years have passed, canvas is widely-used by both amateur and professional painters alike
Nowadays, we can choose between a variety of canvases for our paintings – whether it be an original or a reproduction. It’s amazing how advancements in technology allow us to produce pictures identical to the originals.
This produces higher popularity among customers and, depending on your business, may yield you a greater margin than other art or photo prints.
For a canvas to work correctly with the modern inkjet technology, it needs to be made of slightly different materials. It also requires other surface treatments than the ones we would use for oil or acrylic painting.

Cotton Inkjet Canvas
The inkjet canvas made from 100% cotton is the most expensive & has a rich texture which gives it that undeniably beautiful look and feel. Essentially, you can tell just by looking at it – this was designed to resemble the type of fabric used in oil paintings or even acrylic ones.
The downside of 100% cotton inkjet canvas is that its production method does not guarantee the same color throughout the roll. This makes it less suitable for multiple reproductions or large-scale prints.
Oh, and I should also mention the more luxurious Belgian Linen paper – dubbed as the canvas of masterpieces, this paper has been used by many masters in their work. Consequently, it will be taken up by those who focus on affluent clients who want an aristocratic look for their art or photography.
Polyester Inkjet Canvas
100% polyester inkjet canvas is the most inexpensive option. It is thick, consistent in tone, and popular with photographers who print large-scale photos.
Due to the lack of deep texture, this paper is less suitable for artwork reproductions. It does not produce an accurate copy of the original work.
Poly-cotton canvas
Polyester and cotton are mixed together to create a new form of material that brings the best features of both worlds.

Polycanvas fabric provides excellent results even after being washed several times in cold water with mild detergent. This strong material can also be recycled into new products without any noticeable difference in quality or appearance after retting process is completed
It is an amalgam of the soft texture of cotton mixed with the color consistency of polyester. Usually, it is composed of 60% cotton – 40% polyester or its variations- such as 65% cotton -35% polyester and 70% cotton-30% polyester.

Types of Inkjet Canvas

Matte
Generally, the matte finish is what is present when one purchases an inkjet canvas. This touch gives it that natural feel and makes it suitable for painting on.
The mat texture combines nicely with the pigment based inks to ensure the longevity of prints. This makes it perfect for oil or acrylic paintings, as well as photos.
The downside of this process is that colors can look dull at the end, though this can be fixed with post-print coatings and varnishing.
Satin
The satin finish of the canvas has a beautiful sheen to it which captures the light beautifully. It’s also perfect for replicating photos and paintings alike.
Semi-gloss – Luster
Semi-gloss finishes are a step up from the satin finish. This type of finish has just a hint of sheen while also retaining its texture and feel. Semi-gloss is well suited for photos, but it can also be used to enhance other types of prints as well.
Dye based printers do well with this type of canvas finish, as the colors are made very vibrant.
Gloss
